It was half term last week and I spent it in two places by the sea at opposite ends of the country. For the first part of the week I was in Boscastle in Cornwall, now recovered from the flooding. The weather was, on the whole, beautiful. There was just one blustery day with bouts of quite strong rain, but still OK to go out in. The other days were mild and sunny.
I went there with my friend Ali and her daughter, Joy. We stayed in a little cottage, very oldie-worldie and picturesque. With a garden full of interesting corners, like a typical Cornish wall and a stream at the bottom.
The first day we went for a walk along the cliffs. The scenery was beautiful. The paths were quite steep. My legs felt the effects of it the next day!
The next day we went to Tintagel. It was the blustery day. The wind was so strong they actually closed the castle site and we weren't allowed on the steps and steep pathways. The up side was that we were still allowed into much of the castle and we didn't have to pay. When we tried to walk out of the shelter of the cliff we were nearly blown away. For me it was much more atmospheric. I could imagine Merlin struggling through the stormy night to bring King Uther to Ygraine. (The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart)
I felt truly relaxed after the break. I hadn't been to Cornwall for about 20 years. I must go back very soon, it is a very beautiful part of our country.
