In March five very brave pupils from Hamburg travelled far to the North to visit the partner school in Strengelvag without their parents. It was a long journey of one day with two flights and two different busses from the airport to Strengelvag.
When we arrived all host families gave us a very warm welcome with pizza at the school.
We enjoyed an interesting programme during our stay with visits of a fish factory in Sto and a farm, a trip with a dog sledge, skiing near the school and fish barbecue at the beach, time to play, to dance and to eat together. There were a lot of things to learn: about fish (especially the cod) and fishing with longlines, about life on the Vesteralen Islands (meals and spending the freetime) and of course about the school, the teaching and social life. We were surprised that the school is a real meeting place where a lot of pupils like to play. That is very much different to our school. A lot of things are almost the same as in Hamburg: the rules, the games … What people like is similar in Strengelvag and Hamburg although Strengelvag is very, very small compared to Hamburg. There are no street names and house numbers in Strengelvag!
We were lucky to have really much snow the first days and even sunshine, only one day it rained…
At the end we felt like “stars” because there was a big article in the newspaper about our visit, a whole page with a lot of photos and even one photo on the front page!
It was a great and wonderful experience! Thank you so much everyone in Strengelvag!
